Going on tour from shore to shore, groovin' across the states..word!
- Stop 1:Oddly enough, we started the tour in Oklahoma. There we met a folk song legend, Woodie Guthrie, and learned to sing one of his most familiar tunes, "This Land is Your Land". I bet you have heard your Lombardy Tiger singing this song!
- Stop 2: Grades 3-5 came back to the east coast, good ole Philly, and met Will Smith, a.k.a. The Fresh Prince of BelAir. Genre= rap! Each 4th and 5th grade class wrote a rap that met the following requirements! Four bars, four beats per bar, rhyming words and the rap must tell a story. Grades 4 and 5 are now writing raps in small groups. The Lombardy students are showing that they are clever cats!
- Stop 3: Baltimore, Maryland! Most grade levels learned to sing the song "L'il Liza Jane". She's from Baltimore. In addition to learning to sing the song, they also practiced the square dance move, do-si-do.
- Stop 4: North Carolina. There we met Sally in the tune "Here Comes Sally Down the Alley". Classrooms may have learned to sing the song, recognize melodic contour, perform the beat while singing or learned a concentric circle dance.
- Stop 5: Georgia: Ray Charles- Father of Soul
Kindergarten and 1st Grade
Where should the kindergarten units begin? There is so much to discover about music! I started the year off with some help from my good friends Snowy the Owl, Grizzly the Bear, Flutter the Butterfly and Peter the Rabbit. They each have a different favorite voice! Peter talks, Flutter whispers, Snowy sings and Grizzly shouts. However, Grizzly know that shouting is not expected at Lombardy so he can only use his shout voice to shout "HEY".
PETER: This is my talking voice I use it every day
FLUTTER: This is my whisper voice, it's quieter this way.
GRIZZLY: This is my talking voice, I shout when I say "HEY"
SNOWY: This is my singing voice, I sing all day!
The next big idea is steady beat. First grade starts with this unit. It is a review. "The beat is the heart of music". When they perform the big beat, they tap their hearts with two finger and say "duh". They also learn about the little beat. It is faster. Two little beats fit in each big beat. When they perform the little beat they say "duh-de". Below is a video they watch in class to reinforce steady beat.

The next unit for Kindergarten and 1st Grade is still focused on the steady beat but how the beat can change. In music, beat can go fast, slow and in the middle. Tempo is the term musicians use to refer to the speed or pace of the beat. Kindergarten refers to the tempo as fast, slow and in the middle. In first grade the terms largo, moderato and presto are used!
Composer Edvard Grieg wrote music for the play "Peer Gynt". One piece, In the Hall of the Mountain King, is a perfect study of how the beat changes. It starts slow, accelerates and finishes extremely fast. We watch a video of the animated play and then perform "head, shoulder kness & toes, knees & toes, knees & toes, head, should knees & toes, eyes, ears nose" to an audio recording. The them repeats at least 17 times before a big crashing ending. The kids love it! Below is the video we watch! The music we study comes when the trolls take Peer into the mountain.

The Lombardy Cool Cat Chorus
Concert attire for Orchestra, Band and Chorus will be a "Lombardy Music Maker" t-shirt. It is now available for purchase. The order form has more details and can be found below.
The 4th and 5th grade Cool Cat choirs are off to a great start. In December the chorus will be divided into two groups and each group will visit Arden Courts Memory Care to sing a few carols and to share their concert repertoire. Below are a few sing-a-long videos to carols we may sing. I hope your cool cat has some time to sing-a-long with these videos!

RECORDER SUPPORT VIDEOS
Wow! An elementary music teacher made videos that teach each of the Recorder Karate songs. They are well done and I believe Lombardy students would benefit from practicing with her. While viewing the videos, ads did pop up but they were not offensive. That being said we all know how the internet can be so if you are concerned check out SAFESHARE.TV. This website allows you to create clean videos by simply pasting in the youtube or vimeo links, clicking a button and VIOLA..clean video!
Click HERE to access the recorder videos.

It is so nice to be back in school and getting to know all of the amazing students at Lombardy. I am looking forward to another exciting musical year filled with singing, dancing and playing with music. Please check back to this page often as I will try my best to keep it up to date with lesson photos, links to websites and of course, concert information.
HAMBURGER....Harmonyburger....HAMBURGER!
I do a lot of "hamburger" talk in the music room. I talk hamburger in order to help the students understand the concept of harmony. A burger tastes great on it's own but when cheese, lettuce, ketchup, mustard and a bun is added it tastes much better. In melody a simple melody such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" sounds just fine but when a drum line or bass line is added, it sounds much better. Click on the link below and it will take you to a site where users can layer up on beats, melodies, sound effects and more!

I just found a really fun website for anyone wanting to practice their treble clef note reading skills. If you like "whack-a-mole" you will like this too!

Cool Websites for Music Learning and Fun!
The third grade students have enjoyed honing their note reading skills by playing a note name game at the Classics for Kids website. Click here to check it out!
Many music organizations support websites for kids. I like Dallas Symphony Orchestras webpage and the San Francisco Orchestra's webpage.
